Project X3 is a University of New South Wales multi-disciplinary design workshop with the College of Fine Arts, Built Environment and Faculty of Engineering, where students from a wide background of courses within UNSW are able to apply their skills and experience to develop a sustainable shelter in Fowlers Gap. Project X³ was started in the second semester of 2008. It has since progressed through several design and development stages and is now into its third and final semester.
What is Project X³?
The intended completion date of the shelter at Fowlers Gap is by mid-December 2009.
When will it be complete?
The purpose of the project is to design, develop and construct a pre-fabricated shelter to support artists for short to medium lengths of time in a remote area.
The student group is currently constructing a single bay of the building, approximately one quarter of the total structure, in Kensington, Sydney. When complete this bay will form the blueprint for the rest of the structure.
What is being constructed?
The individual parts and sub-assemblies of the the structure are being created on campus at the University of New South Wales. Upon completion, the components will be moved to the intended site located at the University of New South Wales, Fowlers Gap Arid Research Station.
Where is it being built?
Project X³ is continuation of the Project X multi-disciplinary model. The first Project X was run in 2007, where students combined skills from their respective disciplines to from a ‘snake sculpture’ for ConnectED 2007 conference. This was followed by Project X2 in the first half of 2008 where a small prototype of a proposed remote-areas shelter was developed.
